I do not agree with the statement that nowadays the need for religion is diminishing. I think that we witness the opposite phenomenon - people want to believe in something more than ever.
In my opinion our world is moving faster and people feel overwhelmed by their obligations, work, hectic pace of life. In the world where everyone wants to be successful and earn a lot of money the moral values vanish. However, people need a kind of moral support. Without any belief people feel empty. The need for religion is hidden in human nature.
My opinion may be supported by many recent events. After September 11 the world has seen the power of religion - some fanatics were ready to suicide, to die with the killed. This is a negative aspect of religion. I think that things like this can happen if one goes to extremes. There should exist some limit in religion. This example shows that people are able to abandon themselves in religion.
In spite of that negative aspect we cant forget the crowd which assisted the funeral of Pope John Paul II. Many people of all over the world came to Rome to celebrate this man who always put an emphasis on the need for religion, who talked about culture of love and who was conservative in moral beliefs. He was listened by millions of people, especially young.
This fact tells a lot about my generation - young people need something to believe in, religion is very important in their lives. If it wasnt be so important, nobody would go to pilgrimages .
